How to Install MState Printers

Make sure your device is connected to the SpartanWiFi before trying to install any of the printer installation methods below. Need help connecting to SpartanWiFi?

Printer Installation for Staff, Faculty, and Students on Windows 11

M State staff, faculty, and students should follow these instructions for printer installation.

  1. Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard
  2. In the box that opens, type: \\vff-prt.ad.minnesota.edu
  3. Then click OK
  4. When prompted, sign in:
    • Username: ad\yourStarID
    • Password: Your StarID password
  5. Check Save My Credentials, then click OK
  6. A list of printers will appear
    • Find Spartan-Printing, then right-click it and select Connect
  7. If you see a message to install the driver, click Install
  8. Wait a few minutes while the printer installs

You're Done

The printer will now be available when you print.

MacOS Printing Install Instructions
  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Go to Printers
  3. Click the + under the printer list
  4. Click advanced
    • If advanced isn't there, right click the title bar and click customize
    • Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar
  5. Select type "Windows Printer via Spools"
  6. In the URL, type smb://vff-prt.ad.minnesota.edu/Spartan-Printing
  7. Change the name to Spartan-Printing (Device and Location don't need to be modified)
  8. Under choose a driver, select the "Generic Postscript Printer" and select Add
  9. When you print for the first time, you will be asked for a username and password. This is your StarID and password.  Remember to check the box to save the information.
Chromebook Printing Install Instructions
  1. Install the Mobility Print Chrome Extension from the Chrome web store. (Note: you must run Chrome OS Version 114+)
  2. Open the page to print.
    • The way you print is different depending on the app you're printing from.  For more information, see the documentation for the app.  When you select a printer, make sure you select a Mobility Print printer as identified by the PaperCut icon.  Click "Spartan-Printing".
  3. Print the content
    • For example, to print from Microsoft Word, press Ctrl+P, select a printer; then click Print
  4. If you are prompted for sign in, use the following:
    • Username: yourStarID (example: ab1234cd)
    • Password: your StarID password
iPad Printing Install Instructions
  1. On your iPad navigate to: http://vff-prt:9163/setup (Note: You need to use Safari to download and install the profile)
  2. Click "Download"
    • Next you will be presented with the following prompt, click "Allow"
    • Then, a messge will appear stating you have downloaded the profile, click "Close"
  3. Next, navigate to your Settings app
    • Once in settings it will say "profile downloaded" below your AppleID, tap to open, tap "Install". On some IOS devices you may need to navigate to General, VPN & Device Management, PaperCut Mobility Print for IOS, click "Install"
    • You will then be prompted for your passcode if you have one, then click install, and click done.
  4. You can now print from your iPad, navigate to your document,
    • Tap, one of the following depending on the app you are using:
    • Then tap Print. (Swipe up if you don't see Print), and you will see "Spartan-Printing" as an option, you will be prompted for sign in.
  5. If you are prompted for sign in use the following:
    • Username: yourStarID (example: ab1234cd)
    • Password: your StarID password
Android Printing Install Instructions
  1. On your Android device, navigate to: http://vff-prt:9163/setup
  2. Click "Install or update"
    • Next you will navigate to the app store, click "Install" (You may need to enter your password depending on your security settings)
    • After the Mobility Print app is installed, click "Open"
    • Click "Allow" for Mobility Print to send you notifications
    • Click "Tap here and check the Mobility Print Service is on", if Mobility Print is off, click the slider to enable the service
  3. In an app that you want to print your document, hit the menu icon (Typically this is three dots stacked on the upper right hand corner), either click "Share" then "Print", or only "Print".
  4. Then select "Spartan-Printing" as your printer, and click the print icon/button
  5. If you are prompted for sign in use the following:
    • Username: yourStarID (example: ab1234cd)
    • Password: your StarID password
