MFA Changes coming soon

What is Happening

Microsoft is tightening MFA registration prompts and retiring Microsoft-provided SMS/text and voice calls as MFA methods for Microsoft 365. If you currently use these methods, register a secure alternative, such as Microsoft Authenticator, before the retirement date to avoid being blocked from signing in.

  • January 19, 2027: MFA registration prompts become more restrictive.
  • February 1, 2027: SMS/text and voice calls will no longer be supported MFA methods for Microsoft 365. If you have not registered for a secure alternative, such as the Microsoft Authenticator app, by this date, you will be blocked from signing in until a secure method is registered.

Why is this happening

If Microsoft sees a supported MFA method already configured, it may immediately require you to use that method when signing in rather than allowing continued use of SMS/text or voice authentication.

If you were using SMS/text messages or voice calls for MFA but had previously registered a modern authentication method, such as Microsoft Authenticator, Microsoft may recognize that modern method as already available on your account.

How do I change my MFA settings

You can access your MFA settings by visiting https://www.minnstate.edu/mfa.

Do you have Outlook on your phone

If you have the Microsoft Outlook app installed on your mobile device, try signing in before requesting an MFA reset.

Some users receive a prompt to open the Outlook mobile app and enter a number shown on the sign-in screen. Microsoft may use the Outlook mobile app as a previously registered authentication method, even if you were primarily using SMS/text or voice authentication.

If you see a message similar to:

  1. Leave the sign-in screen open.
  2. Open the Outlook app on your mobile device.
  3. Look for a sign-in approval request.
  4. Enter the number displayed on the sign-in screen.
  5. Approve the request and complete the sign-in process.

I Cannot Sign in, What should I do

For most users experiencing this issue, the quickest resolution is an MFA reset performed by ITS.

Important

Because MFA protects access to your account and personal information, IT must verify your identity before resetting your MFA settings.

Identity verification can be completed:

  • In person with a valid photo ID, or
  • Through a Zoom appointment where you present a valid photo ID

Once IT verifies your identity, IT can reset your MFA registration so you can set up a supported authentication method.

What Happens After My MFA is Reset

After the reset, you will need to register a supported MFA method before you can sign in.

The Microsoft Authenticator app is the recommended option for most users.
