Mac VPN Set-up

Connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides users access to network resources from an off-campus location.  

Follow these steps to set-up the VPN on a Mac computer. 

  1. Open System Preferences/Settings, and click on NetworkUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. Click the dropdown arrow on the lower right on the Network windowUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  3. Select Add VPN Configuration
  4. Select L2TP over IPSec under VPN TypeUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  5. Create the VPN Configuration
    1. Type a description for the VPN in the Service Name box (for example, MSTATE VPN)
    2. Server Address:
      • Server address for Faculty and Staff - vpn2.minnesota.edu 
      • Server address for Students - SpartanVPN.minnesota.edu
    3. Type your ad\YourStarID in the Account Name text box
    4. Type your StarID password in the Password text box
    5. Select Shared Secret for Machine authentication and type vpn@mstate in the text boxUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
    6. Select Options
    7. Check "Send all traffic over VPN connection" boxUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  6. Click Create
  7. Click VPN & FiltersUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  8. Click the toggle to connect to MState VPNUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
